For Patients

The information below will help you understand Dr. Curley’s role and how she can assist you with managing your healthcare needs.

A perioperative physician is a doctor who specialises in the care of patients around the time of surgery, working together with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other health professionals to ensure that patients are in the optimum condition they can be at the time of their operation.

Undergoing surgery is necessary to treat many conditions. However, it can be daunting for patients, especially if they have other medical problems.

Perioperative physicians help with this process. Their role can include:

  • Thorough preoperative assessment of all medical conditions
  • Assessing the risks of surgery in the context of the patient’s overall health
  • Organising any tests that may be required before the operation
  • Advising of any treatments that could reduce the chances of complications around the time of surgery
  • Advising on any changes to a patient’s regular medications that are necessary for the operation to proceed (including management of diabetic and blood thinning medications)
  • Reviewing the patient during their hospital stay, after the operation as necessary

Preoperative assessments are a thorough review of your overall heath and any other medical conditions, with specific focus on the impacts these may have on your surgery. They allow Dr Curley the chance to understand what is important to you, and suggest any improvements that may help the operation go smoothly.

Dr Curley reviews patients on the ward after their operation, to work with surgeons and hospital staff to ensure the recovery process goes smoothly. This can involve managing other medical conditions that may need attention during the stay, including blood pressure, diabetes, heart, lung, and kidney function, among other conditions.

A general physician is a specialist who cares for patients with a broad range of medical conditions. They take a holistic approach to assessing and treating each patient according to their individual problems and concerns.

Dr Curley is experienced in managing complex conditions affecting a variety of body systems. She provides care for acute unwell patients admitted to hospital, as well as seeing patients referred by their general practitioner or other specialists in her consulting rooms. She approaches each patient uniquely, depending on the particular problems they are facing.
